Jean-Daniel Dessimoz (born in 1953) is an electrical engineer and holds a doctorate in technical sciences from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. He also holds a post-graduate degree in business management (MBA) from the University of Lausanne.

He taught in the United States (University of Rhode Island), then worked for more than 35 years as a Professor at the Haute Ecole d’Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud, in Yverdon-les-Bains (HESSO.HEIG-VD, CH). He taught robotics and automation and led various R&D projects. He has contributed to the creation and development of several competence networks in robotics, industrial automation and production engineering. He has also been a member of the board of directors and president of the Swiss Astronautical Association and of the Robot-CH association for the promotion of robotics.

Author of numerous scientific publications, Jean-Daniel Dessimoz has worked as an expert/consultant for many organizations, universities or industries, both abroad and in Switzerland. Particular fields of interest: robotics and automation, computer vision, cognition and cognitics, astronautics.

Jean-Daniel Dessimoz is now enjoying an active retirement, and acts occasionally via the company Roboptics LLC.

In recent decades, he has paid increasing attention to a conceptual convergence between the living and the machines; in this context, motivated by a deepening of the cognitive domain, he has revisited the most fundamental concepts, such as probability, modelling, time, intelligence, values and the collective; thus, de facto, he also finds himself in other domains, and notably in the philosophical arena.

Family network: son of the late Oscar (deceased at 97) and Marie-Thérèse (deceased at 95), Jean-Daniel is married to Nisa, and has three children: Christophe, Lyne and Claire, and five grandchildren.

Publications

The results of my work can be found in many ways. Here are some ways to access it:

  • The link https://www.roboptics.ch/publications-jdd-plus/ leads to a long list of publications, organized in chronological order, where a large part of the publications can be downloaded.
  • The link https://cognition.roboptics.ch/ is for me a good entry point to understand the world and to be able to evolve in it as well as possible. It’s up to you to take advantage of it too!
  • My book of 2020 gathers in an integrated and more profound way my main contributions on the theme corresponding to its title: « Cognition and Cognitics – Definitions and metrics for cognitive sciences, in humans and for thinking machines, 2nd edition of Cognitics, expanded, with considerations on life, through the prism real – imaginary – values – collective, and some bubbles of wisdom for our time ». This book is available for a price that in principle allows traditional booksellers to find their way in economic terms. It can also be purchased from the publisher Roboptics Sàrl (https://www.roboptics.ch/editions-english/), or it should be available for borrowing in libraries. Moreover, the book is also available for purchase on the websites of Amazon and Lulu, always for a price that does not break the market.
  • A lot of other information is also made public, via other specialized websites. You can access it via our well established website: http://jdze.populus.ch/ .
